Kristein reflects on the story of the fall in Genesis, emphasising that the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was not a trap but a necessary part of free will, which is essential for a genuine relationship with God. Without the ability to choose disobedience, obedience would have no meaning.

He connects this fall to a me-centered faith that has emerged in modern times — a “consumer gospel” focused on personal identity, rights, and benefits from God, rather than sacrificial devotion. Worship and obedience should not be about what we get, but what we give to God.

Too often, we are in "the me, me, me, thing".

Kristein also shares the powerful story of William Borden, a wealthy young man who gave up everything to become a missionary. Borden died soon after arriving in the mission field, yet his final words — “No reserve. No retreat. No regret.” — speak of a life fully surrendered to Christ, not for reward, but because of Jesus’ worth.

Lastly, Kristein quoted Jeremiah Johnson. Here is the quote:

Beware the voices in this generation that will stroke the carnality of man by promising fame riches and greatness.

Watch for those, though, who will call this generation to the secret place where I will mantle them with a spirit of brokenness and humility like never before the higher.

The calling in grace, the deeper the crushing will be."
